FOR the first time, physicists have trapped an atom in a way that allows them not only to observe it, but also to play with it. Jeff Kimble at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena trapped several million caesium atoms using laser beams and magnetic fields, then dropped one of them into a trap called a quantum electrodynamic cavity. The cavity consists of a tiny space between two curved mirrors where a photon from a laser beam becomes trapped for long enough to interact with the atom, which is held in the cavity by a second laser. As Kimble hopes to report in a future issue of Physical Review Letters,
